1st Night & Day of Zil Hajj 1446
Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra were very cloudy on the horizon and Queensland had significant rain and clouds.
However, due to the fact the moon met the requirements of height, timing, waxing, setting time, age and position there is no doubt the moon was there but hidden by clouds.
Furthermore, the moon position for the commencement of Muharrum 1448 is absolutely clear and certain, with the first night being 16th June. Therefore Zill Hajj will be a 29 day month (working backwards), based 18th May being the first nigh and 19th May 2026 being the first day of Zill Hajj.
If the 1st day of Zill Hajj was moved to Wednesday 20th May 2026 then we would have a 28 day month which is NOT possible to follow.
After discussions with senior scholars – tonight 18th May 2026 will be the 1st night of Zill Hajj and Tuesday 19th May 2026 being the first day – please note the ruling by Ayatullah Sistani below to manage such situations.
We understand different communities may choose to follow a different date and we ask you to please respect the decisions made as everyone is working with the best of intentions.
You individually need to make your own decision that makes you comfortable.
